What is SPC? How it differs from laminate and hardwood

Three names come up most often when choosing a floor: hardwood, laminate and SPC. All three are sold as "wood-look flooring", but they are different materials, and which one is right depends on the room.

Hardwood

It is real wood, with the warmest texture and the most natural look, and it can be sanded and refinished. In return it is sensitive to water and changes in humidity, so it isn't recommended for bathrooms or kitchens, and it needs regular care.

Laminate

A printed décor and a wear layer are applied over a high-density fibreboard core. It is economical and offers a wide choice of décors. But because the core is wood-based, it swells if water gets underneath.

SPC

SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) is built on a mineral core of stone powder and polymer. That core does not absorb water, so it can be used safely in bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms. It is more stable than wood-based floors and moves less with temperature changes. It is usually laid with a click system and can in most cases go over an existing hard floor.

So which should you choose?

In a dry bedroom, and when the budget allows, hardwood is a pleasure. If budget is the priority, laminate does the job. But if you want one floor throughout the home, finishing the wet rooms in the same décor, SPC is the most practical answer.
